Cast-iron gear pumps are frequently used for lubricating fluids such as oils and heat transfer fluids. For corrosive, water-based, or non-lubricating fluids, stainless steel gear pumps and models with PEEK gears are available.

Technical Selection Criteria for Gear Pumps

The design of a gear pump depends on the fluid, viscosity, temperature, flow rate, pressure, material, seals, and installation configuration. These factors determine the appropriate series, speed, material selection, and motorization.

Medium, Material, and Gasket

Cast-iron gear pumps are frequently used for oils, heat transfer fluids, and many lubricating media. For corrosive, water-based, or non-lubricating media, we evaluate stainless steel models, PEEK gears, and the appropriate seals.

Viscosity and RPM

Gear pumps are suitable for many viscous fluids. As viscosity increases, the speed, size, and motor power must be appropriately selected. For high viscosities, a gearmotor may be required.

Flow rate, pressure, and safety

The appropriate gear pump is determined by the flow rate, pressure, temperature, and installation conditions. Gear pumps are generally self-priming. However, the suction line, operating conditions, and pressure limits must still be checked.

What is a gear pump?

A gear pump is a rotary positive-displacement pump. Two meshing gears form pumping chambers and transport the fluid evenly from the suction side to the discharge side.

This makes gear pumps particularly suitable for oils, heat transfer fluids, and many viscous media that require a consistent flow rate. For corrosive, water-based, or non-lubricating media, we recommend stainless steel models and, depending on the application, PEEK gears.

The choice of the appropriate gear pump depends primarily on the fluid, viscosity, temperature, flow rate, pressure, and material requirements.

For which media are cast iron and stainless steel gear pumps suitable?

Cast housings with case-hardened steel gears are generally designed for lubricating media designed, e.g.:

Lubricating oils, hydraulic oils
Heat transfer fluids and heating oils
Additives with sufficient lubricating effect

For Non-lubricating, corrosive, or water-based media are our Stainless steel gear pumps with PEEK gears planned.

The choice of material should always be based on the medium data (safety data sheet, product data sheet).

What viscosities can your gear pumps handle?

By default, we design our gear pumps for Viscosities up to approx. 20,000 mm²/s (cSt) .
Furthermore, other applications are possible, but must be technically reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

The higher the viscosity, the lower the permissible speed.
We select suitable drives (4-, 6-, or 8-pole motors or gear motors) based on:

Medium
Temperature
desired flow rate
Pressure and pipe routing

This ensures that the pump and drive operate within the permissible range.

In what temperature ranges can the pumps be operated?

Depending on the model, our gear pumps cover a temperature range of approx. -40 °C to +200 °C .

These are technical limitswhere materials, seals, and gap dimensions must be precisely matched to the application.
Applications close to these limits should therefore always be coordinated with us.

For many standard applications (oils, heat transfer fluids), operating temperatures are typically well within this range.

Are your gear pumps self-priming?

Due to their design, gear pumps are self-priming.

The actual achievable suction height however, this depends heavily on:

Medium (density, vapor pressure)
Temperature
Viscosity
Diameter, length, and design of the suction line

In the case of oils or highly viscous media, the possible suction height is reduced accordingly.
In practice, a suction line that is as short as possible, generously dimensioned, and absolutely leak-proof crucial.

We should review specific suction heights together based on your boundary conditions.

What delivery times can be expected for gear pumps?

As we are manufacturers ourselves and have an extensive warehouse for components and assemblies, we can usually deliver the majority of our gear pump portfolio within approximately 1 to 4 weeks deliver.

Standard versions include shorter-term deliveries often possible by arrangement.
Special designs (e.g., special materials, motors, or seal combinations) require additional time depending on the scope.
